This weekend, 17–18 May, the new Estonian BMX racing season starts with a bang – a two-day international race at the Uuesalu track, with riders from Estonia, Latvia and Finland across many age and race classes.
BMX Tallinn invites all sports fans to an adrenaline-packed weekend. Racing starts at 12:30 on Saturday and 11:30 on Sunday, and entry is free for spectators.
Race director Eger Karuse stresses the importance of the opener: “The season opener is more than just a race – it sets the tone for the whole season and shows how the riders have developed over the winter. The Uuesalu track is also one of the most technical and exciting in Estonia, which makes it thrilling for riders and spectators alike.”
Tight competition is expected especially in the youth classes, where rider numbers have grown in recent years, and Estonia’s best elite riders will be on the track too. Chief commissaire and BMX Tallinn member Jaan Lajal believes the start of the season in Uuesalu is a milestone: “It is great to see that the development of BMX racing in Estonia is not just talk – the Uuesalu races prove that we are really taking important steps forward. Young people now have great opportunities to train and race, which gives hope that our athletes will go further and further.”
On Saturday we pay tribute to Jaan Tults, who has given invaluable support to the development of BMX racing in Estonia over the years. “It was Jaan Tults who founded the King of Tallinn race, celebrating its 10th edition this year, and he led it himself for years. His contribution to BMX racing in Northern Estonia has been invaluable – without his dedication the sport would be nowhere near as strong and visible in Estonia today,” says Lajal.
The Uuesalu track was completed in August 2024 and is the first full-size BMX racing track in Northern Estonia that meets the requirements of the International Cycling Union (UCI). It was born from the cooperation of the local community and supporters, and is built for both training and international races.
“BMX racing is a sport that needs a track. Building the Uuesalu track is a real example of what can only be achieved together with the community. When you really want something and act together, great things happen,” says Eger Karuse. The track is 365 metres long and has many technical features suitable for both beginners and experienced athletes.
The race weekend is part of the Estonian BMX Cup, organised by BMX Tallinn with Tartu Sports Club Velo. In 2025 the cup has six rounds – four in Estonia and two in Finland – and is run in cooperation with the Estonian Cycling Federation and Finnish BMX clubs.
Saturday, 17 May – “King of Tallinn” celebrates its 10th edition and is also the first round of the Estonian BMX Cup. It is a traditional race that has become an important part of Estonian BMX culture.
Sunday, 18 May – “Rae Parish BMX Championships” – held for the second time, and hopefully an annual tradition in the future.
Both races are Estonian Cycling Federation category 1 events and open to all riders with a UCI licence, regardless of nationality. More about the cup rounds and entry requirements at www.ejl.ee and www.bmxtallinn.ee.
